Jeshua (Jess) Bray left us too soon. Jess' larger-than-life personality had a way of leaving a mark in the hearts of those he met. He was a determined, dedicated, fun-loving guy who made the most of his time here with us.
The first Jess Bray Memorial Slo-Pitch Tournament began as a celebration of Jess's life to provide his loved ones with an opportunity to do everything Jess loved most: play some ball, surround his family and friends with his spirit, and enjoy food and drinks while having a great time.
To honour Jess' legacy and recognize the special person he was, BLG worked with his family to establish an endowment fund, the Jess Bray Memorial Fund. All money raised will help establish an endowment in perpetuity in his honour through an annual bursary or scholarship at his alma mater, Thompson Rivers University. Please check out the link for more information on the application process.
The tournament was an opportunity to raise additional money to put towards this.
By the end of the tournament, with the help of BLG, colleagues, friends, and family, the $150,000 fundraising goal was accomplished. With this success, it seemed natural to make it an annual event. The Jess Bray Slo-Pitch Tournament is scheduled for the last week of June in Strathmore, Alberta. It is a two-day event with a guarantee of three games. You can register as an individual, with a couple of friends or as a team.
The committee is a collective of close friends and family committed to keeping Jess' spirit alive.
Our vision is to continue Jess' legacy through community involvement and to give back to those who helped him along the way. In 2022, we continued raising money for the TRU scholarship and partnered with Starlight Children's Foundation. Starlight Children's Foundation® Canada does what no medicine can do: create priceless smiles and memories for seriously ill children and their families. Jess would be the first to tell you they created amazing memories for him and his family when they sent them to Boston to meet and watch his favourite teams.
On behalf of Jess' family and friends I would like to Congratulate Januel Ibasco a 2y Law Student at Thompson Rivers University and the first recipient of the Jess Bray Memorial Award.
